  1. Pakistan shares much of the ancient history of India.  Aryan
  2. invaders captured the region around 1500 BC forging a hindu
  3. civilization that dominated for 2,000 years.  In 712 AD, Arab
  4. invasions brought Islam and under the Mogul Empire, from 1526 to
  5. 1857, Moslems ruled most of India.  After World War I, the
  6. Moslems of British India demanded independent rights.  Mohammad
  7. Ali Jinnah became the principle leaders of the Pakistan
  8. movement, a leader of the Moslem League from 1916 and from 1940
  9. advocated a Moslem Pakistani state.  On August 14, 1947, the
  10. Moslem self-ruling portions of India became Pakistan.  Pakistan
  11. was divided into two areas, East and West, separated by 1000
  12. miles on the other side of India. In 1956, Pakistan became a
  13. republic and in October 1958 General Mohammad Ayub Khan took
  14. power in a coup.  He was elected President in 1960 and again in
  15. 1965.  Pakistan is a member of the Central Treaty Organization,
  16. aligned with the West and after clashes between Indian and China
  17. in 1962, made agreements for commercial treaties with China. 
  18. Ayub resigned in March, 1969 and the government was turned over
  19. to General Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan and martial law was declared. 
  20. On March 25, 1971 government troops launched attacks in the east
  21. and with the help of India, the independent country of Bangladesh
  22. was declared.  Over 10 million fled into India.  By December 3,
  23. 1971 full scale war had broken out between India and Pakistan,
  24. lasting until December 17.  Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in December, 1970
  25. became President.  In July 1977 he was overthrown in a military
  26. coup and executed.  Pakistan has been very supportive of the
  27. Afghan war against the Soviets.  There are now over 2 million
  28. Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
